The importance of a diet and exercise plan.
You may want to lose a few pounds, build muscle, get into shape or simply be healthier. Clearly, you need to start working-out on a regular basis, preferably under the supervision of a qualified and experienced personal trainer.
But there are numerous other factors that can promote your success or impede your progress and your diet is the key one, which is why a proper diet and exercise plan is so important!
As you may know, what, when and how you eat is directly related to your general health and well being. Certain foods and dietary habits have greatly detrimental effect on your body while others promote health and can even ward off diseases. In this sense, virtually anyone must be mindful of their diet.
People who exercise on a regular basis must be extra careful as their nutritional habits can directly impact their fitness goals and even their health.
The main reason why you eat is to fuel your body with energy. Clearly, when you work-out, your body needs more energy. The amount of additional calories required depends on the frequency, duration and intensity of your training sessions as well as on your age, gender and overall health. Failing to provide your body with sufficient “fuel” will not only slow down your progress but may be dangerous for your overall health.
The second reason why you need to adjust your diet to your exercise routine is that diet is the primal source of essential nutrients (vitamins, minerals, micro-elements, essential fatty acids) and those nutrients tend to deplete faster in people who work out. Unless you want to risk serious health complications due to vitamin and/or mineral deficiencies, you need to increase the consumption of foods rich in vitamins, minerals and micro-elements.
Last but not least, the type of food you consume should help your main exercise goal. For example, if your aim is to build muscle mass, you need to increase your intake of high-protein foods.
The easiest way to figure out to what nutrition plan to stick as well as are there any particular foods that you need to avoid or consume prior or right after a training session is to consult your personal trainer.
